Erythrocytes are generally characterized as oval in shape and their characteristic red colour is due to the respiratory pigment haemoglobin.
Function of Erythrocytes
The principal function associated to the erythrocytes is oxygen and carbon dioxide transport. In addition to this gas exchange function, they also play a role in homeostasis protecting against oxidative damage and regulating blood flow distribution in muscles.

Erythrocytes directly participate in the immune complex reaction and haemoglobin is an important source of bioactive peptides vital in the innate immune response.
